Tree Removal in the Washita Valley
Anadarko is the county seat of Caddo County, a city of about 5,745 people on the Washita River, about 50 miles southwest of Oklahoma City. The Wichita Agency was reestablished on the river's north bank in 1871, and the town has been a center for Native nations of the region ever since. River valleys grow big trees, and the tree removal we do in Anadarko often deals with large cottonwoods, elms, pecans and hackberries that have grown tall on good soil.
Big river-valley trees
Trees near the Washita and its draws grow fast. That brings shade quickly, but fast-grown wood is often weaker, and these trees can drop limbs in storms or even on calm days. We check for deadwood, weak unions and decay, then prune to reduce weight and risk, or remove trees that are past saving.
Snow and ice
Anadarko averages about 9.9 inches of snow a year, more than many towns to the south, and its recorded lows reach 17 below zero. Snow and ice add weight to branches all at once, and trees with long, heavy limbs or narrow forks are the ones that break. Reducing the length of the heaviest limbs and removing deadwood before winter helps trees carry the load.
Storm cleanup
After a storm we start with what is dangerous: limbs on roofs, trees across driveways, and broken pieces hanging in the crown. If a line is down or touching a tree, the utility handles that first. Then we cut up and clear the rest, chip brush, and haul or stack the wood.
Older downtown and neighborhoods
The Anadarko Downtown Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. Neighborhoods around the older part of town have established trees over homes, sidewalks and alleys. Removals there are almost always sectional, with each piece lowered so nothing hits roofs or masonry.
Trimming for clearance
Limbs over roofs, rubbing siding, or blocking driveways and streets are common requests. We remove them at proper branch junctions, so the tree keeps a natural shape and seals cuts cleanly.
Picking the right trees to keep
Not every tree on a river-valley lot needs to stay. Volunteer elms, hackberries and cottonwoods often sprout along fences and foundations and grow into problems within a few years. Removing them while they are small is quick and cheap. The trees worth investing in are the ones with a sound trunk, good spacing from the house and a strong branch structure; those are the ones we prune carefully and protect.
Clearance over streets and alleys
Many older Anadarko lots back onto alleys with garbage pickup, utility poles and service lines. Low limbs over an alley get hit by trucks and torn, leaving ragged wounds that rot. We raise these limbs with clean cuts so trucks pass under them and keep branches clear of service drops. Trees growing into the main lines on the poles are the electric company's responsibility, and we leave those to them.
Stump grinding
After removal, we grind stumps below grade so the yard can be leveled and reseeded. Fast-growing species like cottonwood and elm often sprout from stumps, and grinding stops most of that.

Anadarko Questions
Why do cottonwoods near the river drop so many limbs?
Cottonwoods grow fast and have weak wood, so they shed limbs readily. Regular removal of deadwood and reducing long limbs over the house lowers the risk.
Can you prepare trees for winter?
Yes. Late fall pruning to remove deadwood and lighten heavy limbs helps trees handle snow and ice loads.
Do you work near the historic district?
Yes. Near older buildings we lower every piece with rigging so nothing lands on roofs or masonry.
