Foothill Properties Near Meers

Meers is an unincorporated community on State Highway 115 in the foothills of the Wichita Mountains, founded in 1901 as a gold prospecting town. The old Meers Store, listed on the National Register in 1978, is the only original structure left. Homes nearby sit on rocky, rolling ground at about 1,460 feet, near the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. Tree removal near Meers is mostly cedar, clearing around homes, and trimming trees in rough terrain.

Cedar around homes

Eastern redcedar fills in quickly on foothill ground. OSU Extension calls it a hazardous fuel because its oily foliage ignites easily and throws embers downwind, and because its low branches let a grass fire climb into taller trees. Its guidance is to keep 30 to 60 feet of open space between cedars and a roofline and to prune any cedar near a home at least 6 feet up. We cut cedars below the lowest green branch and chip or haul the brush.

Clearing in rocky terrain

Rock and slope make work slower here. Equipment access may be limited, and some jobs need to be done on foot with saws. We look at access before quoting and plan the work so cut material does not roll downhill into structures, fences or drainages.

Near the refuge

The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, created in 1901 as a forest reserve and covering about 59,020 acres, lists Meers as its nearest community. The refuge uses prescribed fire to manage habitat. For homeowners nearby, keeping cedar and brush away from buildings is good practice whatever the source of a fire might be. Burn bans can also be in place during periods of high fire danger, so we do not burn brush; we chip or haul it.

Trimming oaks and yard trees

Oaks and other hardwoods on foothill lots are worth keeping for shade and character. We remove deadwood, raise low limbs for access and fire clearance, and thin crowded crowns. Cuts are made at proper junctions to help the tree seal over.

Removals and stumps

Dead and dying trees near homes, sheds and driveways come down in controlled sections. Stumps can be ground, though rock near the surface may limit depth; we will tell you up front what to expect.

Dead oaks after dry years

Oak woodland in the foothills can lose trees after a run of dry years, and dead oaks near homes, driveways and trails become hazards as they dry out and lose limbs. We take these down while they are still sound enough to climb or rig. A dead tree that has stood for years gets brittle and much harder to remove safely, so it is better to act soon after it dies.

The Meers Fault

The community is known for the Meers Fault, and the Oklahoma Geological Survey installed a seismograph at the Meers Store in 1985. It is a reminder that the ground here is rock close to the surface, which matters for stump grinding and equipment access.

Meers Questions

Do you burn the cedar you cut?

No. We chip it or haul it away. Burning brush piles throws embers, and burn bans can be in effect when fire danger is high.

Can you reach trees on steep or rocky ground?

Usually, though some work has to be done on foot. We look at access before quoting so the plan fits the site.

Which cedars should I remove first?

Start with those closest to the house and any that bridge ground fuel into taller trees or the roof.
