A Railroad Town With Big Trees
Chickasha, the county seat of Grady County, was founded in 1892 when the Rock Island railroad built through Indian Territory, and today it is a city of about 16,051 people. The Washita River runs through the north end of town and forms part of its eastern border, and Line Creek crosses the north side before joining it. That water, along with the city's age, means plenty of large trees. Our tree removal work in Chickasha comes with trimming, storm cleanup and stump grinding in both older neighborhoods and newer areas.
Wetter than much of the region
Chickasha averages about 36.6 inches of precipitation a year, more than towns farther southwest. More moisture means trees grow bigger and faster, and big crowns catch more wind. In heavy spring storms, saturated soil can let a large tree tip over at the roots. Leaning trees, cracked soil around the base and exposed roots after a storm are reasons to call.
Trimming established trees
Neighborhoods near downtown and around the university hold mature elms, oaks, pecans and maples. Trimming focuses on removing deadwood, clearing roofs and driveways, and reducing heavy limbs. We avoid topping, which leaves weak sprouts that break in the next storm.
Removals on city lots
When a tree has to come out, we usually take it down in sections with rigging, lowering each piece into open space. Fences, garages and neighbors' yards stay protected. Trees near utility lines may need the electric company to clear the line first.
Trees along creeks and the river
Properties near Line Creek and the Washita often have cottonwoods, willows and elms. These grow quickly and break easily, and bank trees can be undercut by high water. We look at lean and root exposure, then trim or remove as needed.
Young trees in newer parts of town
Newer homes on the edges of Chickasha usually start with small trees planted by the builder. These are easy to shape now and hard to fix later. Early structural pruning picks one strong leader, removes rubbing branches and spaces the main limbs along the trunk. It takes little time on a young tree and produces a shade tree that handles wind and ice far better when it is grown.
Stump grinding
We grind stumps below grade and clean up the area so you can seed or sod. Surface roots that lift the lawn can be ground too.
Holiday lights and tree health
Chickasha takes its holiday lights seriously, and plenty of homeowners wrap their own yard trees as well. Lights left wrapped tightly around trunks and limbs for years can girdle the bark as the tree grows. If you leave lights up long term, loosen or rewrap them each year. When we prune, we can remove old wire and clips that have started to cut into branches.
Cold snaps and ice
Chickasha's recorded low was 12 below zero on December 23, 1989. Hard freezes and ice add load to limbs and can crack weak unions. A pruning visit before winter helps trees carry the weight.

My tree is leaning more after a storm. Is that serious?
A lean that changed after a storm, especially with cracked or raised soil on one side, can mean the roots have shifted. Keep people and cars away and have it looked at soon.
Do you trim trees near the university?
Yes. We work throughout Chickasha, including the older neighborhoods around USAO.
Can you remove a tree near a creek?
Yes. We plan cuts to keep wood out of the water and check the bank before working.
