Tree Care for Marlow Homes

Marlow is a Stephens County city of about 4,385 people where U.S. Route 81 crosses State Highway 29, about 10 miles north of Duncan and roughly 30 miles east of Lawton. Its neighborhoods are long established, with big trees that were planted decades ago, and the tree removal we do in Marlow reflects that: taking out the ones in decline, trimming mature trees so they stay safe, and grinding out the stumps.

Trimming mature neighborhood trees

The most common request in an established town is clearance: limbs over the roof, branches brushing the siding, a canopy hanging low over the street or sidewalk. We remove those limbs at the right junctions, so the tree keeps its natural shape. While we are up in the tree we also take out deadwood, which is often the first thing to fall in a storm.

Older trees also tend to have one or two large limbs that have grown too long and too heavy. Rather than remove them outright, we can often reduce their length by cutting back to a smaller lateral branch. That lowers the stress on the attachment and the risk of a break.

Removals in town

When a tree is dying or has become dangerous, we usually take it down in pieces in town. Marlow lots have fences, garages, sheds and neighbors close by, and a controlled removal keeps all of that intact. If the tree is near a utility line, the electric company may need to be involved before work begins.

Stump grinding

After a removal, a stump is easy to leave and hard to live with. It sends up sprouts, gets in the way of mowing and can attract insects as it rots. We grind it below the surface and clean up the chips. If you plan to plant grass, a layer of topsoil over the hole makes the result smooth.

Parks and creeks around town

Marlow has a strong set of public green spaces, including Redbud Park with its trail and Outlaw Cave, and Miller Park with its pond and trail. The town's history traces to the Wildhorse Creek area, where the Marlow family settled in 1880. Properties near creeks and draws often have cottonwoods, willows and elms that grow fast and break easily, and those trees are worth checking after a heavy rain or wind.

Redbuds and ornamental trees

Redbud Park is a reminder that Oklahoma's state tree does well here. Redbuds, crape myrtles and other small ornamentals in Marlow yards need a lighter touch than big shade trees: removing crossing branches, dead stems and the occasional limb that has grown over a walkway. Redbuds in particular can form weak, narrow forks as they age, and a small corrective cut early can keep one from splitting later.

When to call

Good times to have trees looked at are late winter, when the canopy is bare and structure is easy to see, and right after a storm, when broken limbs may still be hung up in the crown.

Marlow Questions

My neighbor's tree hangs over my roof. Can you trim it?

Talk with your neighbor first; it avoids disputes and they may want to share the cost. With their agreement we can trim the overhang back at proper branch junctions so the tree stays healthy. If there is a disagreement, get advice on your rights before any cutting.

Is late winter really the best time to prune?

For most shade trees, yes. Without leaves, structure is easy to see and cuts begin sealing with spring growth. Dead or broken limbs can be removed any time.

Do you serve homes outside Marlow city limits?

Yes. We work on acreage around Marlow as well as lots in town.
