A Fast-Growing Town Northeast of Lawton
Elgin has been one of the quickest-growing places in the Lawton area. The town counted 1,210 people in 2000, 2,156 in 2010 and 3,656 in 2020. Growth like that means new houses on ground that was pasture or brush a few years earlier, and a lot of the tree removal and clearing we do in Elgin comes from that change: clearing a lot before a build, cleaning up what the builder left, and getting newly planted trees off to a good start.
Lot clearing before you build
A rural lot near Elgin can carry a surprising amount of woody growth: cedar, hackberry, elm and mesquite-like scrub along draws and old fence rows. Before a foundation goes in, the builder usually wants a clean pad, a clear driveway path and room for the septic system. We take out the trees and brush you mark, chip or haul the material, and grind stumps in the build area so they do not rot under a slab or driveway later.
We also leave the good trees standing when you want them. A healthy oak at the edge of the lot can be the best shade you will ever have, but only if it is protected during construction. Heavy equipment parked over its roots or a trench cut through them can kill it slowly over two or three years. We can flag trees to keep and talk through where the work zone should stop.
Pruning young trees the right way
New subdivisions get new trees, and the first ten years decide what they will look like at forty. Structural pruning on a young tree is quick and inexpensive: pick one strong central leader, remove branches that cross or rub, and space the main limbs so they are not all coming out of the trunk at the same height. A tree trained this way handles wind and ice far better than one that was left to grow into a tangle of competing stems.
Wind out on the open prairie
Elgin sits at about 1,273 feet near the junction of US 277 and State Highway 17, with plenty of open ground around it. Trees on the edge of a field or a new subdivision take the full force of spring storms with nothing to break the wind. Dead limbs, split leaders and trees that were already leaning are the first to go. We remove hazards and thin dense crowns so wind passes through instead of pushing the whole tree over.
Removals near new homes
Sometimes a tree that looked fine when the lot was bought turns out to be in the wrong place: too close to the foundation, over the new roof, or in the way of a shop or driveway. We remove these in sections when space is tight and haul the wood away, so the yard is ready for sod or a fence.

Elgin Questions
Should I clear my lot before or after I pick a builder?
It is usually best to know the house footprint, driveway and septic location first, so only the trees in the way come out. Once you have a site plan, we can mark what goes and what stays.
Do you grind the stumps when you clear a building lot?
We can, and in the build area we recommend it. A buried stump under a driveway or slab will rot and settle later. Outside the work zone, you can choose to leave stumps or have them ground.
How do I protect trees I want to keep during construction?
Keep vehicles, materials and trenches out of the area under the canopy as much as possible. A simple temporary fence around that zone does more to save a tree than anything done after the damage.
