Between the East and West Cache Creeks
Walters, the county seat of Cotton County, sits between East Cache Creek and West Cache Creek in the Taovayan Valley, about 19 miles south of Lawton. It is a town of about 2,412 people. Creek country grows trees fast, and the tree removal work we do in Walters often involves big bottomland trees: cottonwoods, elms, hackberries and pecans that grew large on good soil and moisture, and that tend to break when weather turns hard.
Bottomland trees and their habits
Trees near the creeks grow quickly, but quick growth often means brittle wood and heavy limbs. Cottonwoods in particular shed branches in wind and can lose large limbs on still summer days. Trees along banks also get undercut when high water scours the soil, which can leave them leaning toward the channel. We look at lean, root exposure and the soundness of the trunk when deciding whether a creek-side tree should be pruned, reduced or removed.
Wet springs and dry spells
Walters averages about 34.4 inches of precipitation a year, and the spring can bring heavy, monsoon-like rain, with drought possible at other times. That swing is hard on trees. Saturated soil lets a tree with a big crown tip over in a storm, and a long dry stretch can kill fine roots and leave the crown thin. After a wet spring storm, check for soil heaving on one side of the trunk; it can mean the roots have shifted.
Storm and ice cleanup
When a storm drops limbs across a yard or a tree on a roof, we start with the dangerous pieces: anything on the house, across the driveway or hanging in the crown. If a line is involved, the electric utility has to clear it first. Then we cut up and remove the rest, chip the brush and haul or stack the wood. Ice storms tend to break many limbs at once, so cleanup often ends with pruning the torn stubs back to clean cuts.
Trimming in town
Older streets in Walters have established trees over homes and sidewalks. Clearance trimming, deadwood removal and reducing heavy limbs keep those trees safer. We aim to remove only what needs to go and avoid topping, which leaves weak regrowth.
Stump grinding
Stumps of fast-growing bottomland trees often sprout vigorously after removal. Grinding the stump below grade stops most of that and lets you mow or plant over it. We can grind surface roots as well when they are lifting the lawn.
A town that grew with the county
Walters was organized in 1901 under another name, McKnight, and won the county seat in a 1912 election. Many homes in town sit on lots that have had trees on them for generations.

Walters Questions
Is a leaning creek-bank tree always dangerous?
Not always. Many trees lean toward water and stay put for decades. A lean that changed recently, exposed or broken roots, or cracking soil on the far side are signs it needs attention soon.
Why does my cottonwood keep dropping limbs?
Cottonwoods grow fast and their wood is weak, so they shed limbs readily, sometimes even on calm days. Removing deadwood and reducing long limbs over the house lowers the risk.
Can you remove stumps that keep sprouting?
Yes. Grinding below grade removes most of the tissue that sprouts. A few shoots may still come up from roots and can be mowed or clipped.
