When a Tree Needs to Come Down
Tree removal is the last resort, but in Lawton it is often the right one. A tree that has died after a dry summer, split down the middle in an ice storm, or started leaning toward the house is not going to get safer with time. We take trees down in controlled sections when there is a roof, fence or line in the way, and fell them in one piece only when there is open ground to land them.
Signs a tree has reached that point
- Dead or mostly bare crown. Oaks and elms that leaf out thin or not at all in spring, especially after drought, rarely come back.
- A crack through the trunk or main fork. Bradford pears and elms with tight V-shaped forks often split right down the center after wind or ice.
- Fresh lean or lifted soil. A tree that has started leaning recently, with soil heaving on the opposite side, has lost root hold.
- Mushrooms or hollow sound at the base. Fungus at the root flare and hollow trunks point to decay where the tree carries the most load.
- Construction damage. Post oaks in particular decline slowly after their roots are cut or buried under fill for a driveway, pool or addition.
Some trees with one of these problems can be kept with pruning or by removing a single bad stem. We tell you when that is the case, and the estimate reflects it.
How a removal comes apart
On a typical Lawton lot there is not room to drop a 50-foot elm in one piece. The climber or bucket truck takes the crown down first, lowering big limbs on ropes so they do not crash onto the roof or fence. Then the trunk comes down in short sections. Brush goes through the chipper, and the trunk wood is either cut into rounds and left for you, or loaded and hauled. Alleys behind many older Lawton homes make access easier; corner lots and backyards with narrow gates take more hand carrying, and that is reflected in the price.
Power lines and removals
Many of the trees we remove grow along back lot lines where distribution lines run overhead. If any part of the tree is within reach of a primary line, the utility has to make it safe before we work, and we do not cut around energized wires. A service drop running through the crown may need a temporary disconnect from the electric company. We point this out at the estimate so it does not hold up the job day.
Stumps and cleanup
The stump is cut low to the ground. Grinding is a separate line on the estimate, so you can add it now or leave it. Cleanup includes raking, blowing off driveways, and hauling everything unless you ask to keep firewood. If you plan to handle the wood yourself, keep in mind that City of Lawton bulky pickup only takes pieces 6 feet or shorter and no more than 24 inches across.
What a Removal Covers
Each removal estimate spells out these pieces so you can see where the cost is.
Hazard and dead tree removal
Trees with dead crowns, split trunks, root failure or decay taken down before they fall on their own.
Sectional removal near structures
Limbs and trunk sections lowered on ropes when the tree stands over a roof, fence, shed or pool.
Leaning and uprooted trees
Trees partly tipped by wind or soaked ground, removed with tension managed so nothing springs back.
Wood and brush handling
Chipping, hauling, or trunk wood cut into rounds and stacked for you to keep.
Optional stump grinding
Priced as a separate item, ground below grade and backfilled if you choose.

How a Tree Removal Works
1. Look at the tree and targets
We check the trunk, forks and root area, and note the roof, fence, lines and drop zones around it.
2. Sort out the lines
If the tree reaches a power line, we tell you to contact the utility so the line is made safe before work.
3. Take it down
The crown comes down in lowered pieces, then the trunk in sections or in one fell where there is room.
4. Chip, haul and clean
Brush is chipped, wood is hauled or stacked, and the yard is raked and blown off.

Tree Removal Questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree on my own property in Lawton?
We are not aware of a general permit for removing a tree from private residential property in Lawton, but rules can change and trees in the street right-of-way or a utility easement are a different matter. If a tree sits near the curb or in an easement, we check with the City of Lawton before cutting.
How long does a removal take?
A small or medium tree in an open yard is often done in a few hours. A large oak or elm over a house, taken down in sections and hauled, can take most of a day. The estimate includes a time frame.
Can you leave the wood for firewood?
Yes. Tell us at the estimate and we will cut the trunk into rounds and stack them where you want. Leaving the wood usually lowers the price because there is less to haul.
Is a dead tree more dangerous to take down?
Often, yes. Dead wood is brittle and can break unpredictably when a climber puts weight on it or a limb is lowered. Dead trees are frequently taken down with a bucket truck or with more rigging, which can affect the price.
What happens to my lawn under the work area?
We use plywood or mats where heavy equipment crosses soft ground when needed, and we lower wood instead of dropping it near lawns and beds. Some flattened grass is normal and recovers within a few weeks in the growing season.
