Cedar, Brush and Big Open Country

Indiahoma is a small town of about 275 people just south of US Route 62, roughly 24 driving miles west of Lawton. Out here, the trees that cause the most trouble are not the shade trees in the yard but the eastern redcedar that fills in fence lines, pastures and the ground around homes. Much of the tree removal we do near Indiahoma is cedar removal and clearing, along with pruning and removing the yard trees people want to keep safe.

Why cedar is worth removing

Oklahoma State University Extension calls eastern redcedar the top conservation concern for the state's USDA cost-share technical committee and links it to harm to water quality, wildlife, agriculture and public safety. Around a house, the bigger issue is fire. OSU describes cedar as a hazardous fuel because its foliage holds volatile oils and it can throw thousands of burning embers downwind. Cedars growing close to a house, a barn or a hay storage area are the first ones we would take out.

How we take cedar down

Cedar has to be cut below its lowest green branch, or the stump can keep growing from that limb. Small cedars come out quickly with a saw; larger ones near structures are dropped in a controlled direction or taken down in sections. Then the brush has to be dealt with. OSU's management guidance advises against stacking cut cedar into piles, because burning piles can throw embers hundreds of feet. Near a home we chip the brush or haul it off.

Clearing for a home site or a view

Some owners want a few acres opened up around the house for a yard, a garden or a clear view. Others want an access path for a trailer, or room around a new shop. We clear the cedar and scrub you mark and leave the oaks and other trees you want to keep. If you are not sure which is which, we can walk the property with you and point out what is cedar, what is hardwood and what is worth saving.

Yard trees still need care

The big elms and hackberries planted around older homes in town do the same work here as anywhere: shade, wind protection, privacy. We trim deadwood out of them, raise low limbs over driveways and remove trees that have become hazards. Indiahoma sits at about 1,345 feet, and the open ground around town gives spring storms a long run at those trees.

A smaller town with quiet land

The Treasure Lake Job Corps center, which had been part of the community, closed in 2015. Today Indiahoma is a quiet exurb of the Lawton metro, and many properties have more land than a city lot. That usually means more room to work and more flexibility on where brush and wood can go.

Indiahoma Questions

Is there help paying for cedar removal on farmland?

OSU Extension notes that federal and state cost-share programs exist for juniper control on agricultural land. Your local conservation district or USDA office can tell you whether your property qualifies.

Can I just burn the cedar we cut?

Check for a burn ban first; Oklahoma counties can issue them during high fire danger. Near a house we recommend chipping or hauling, because burning cedar piles throw embers.

Will you leave the oaks?

Yes. Tell us what you want kept, or walk the property with us and we will flag the hardwoods before any cutting starts.
